Loved by our clients

Erin Ponting

The shop was able to get me in the same day as well as finish my oil change and inspect a strange noise my car had by the end of the day so that I could have my car back by the weekend! The pricing was extremely reasonable and they did not charge me for anything unnecessary. The staff was extremely friendly, explaining questions other customers had so they could understand what was wrong. I will definitely be returning whenever I need car service!

Oil Change FAQs

Why do I need to change my oil?

Clean, well-circulating oil helps your engine last longer, perform more efficiently and improves your gas mileage.

How often do I need to change my oil?

With older vehicles, the standard has always been to change the oil every three months or 3,000 miles.

With advancements in automotive technology, many newer vehicles can go 5,000 miles or more before an oil change is required.

What types of oils are there?

There are three main types of oils:

  1. Conventional
  2. Synthetic blend
  3. Synthetic

What is conventional oil?

Conventional oils are standard, petroleum-based oil and are great for normal use but limited in the protection they offer.

What is synthetic blend oil?

Synthetic blend oils combine conventional and synthetic oils. They are sometimes referred to as “high-mileage” oils.

What is synthetic oil?

Synthetic oils are manufactured to provide more additives and fewer impurities that can improve your engine’s performance.

Synthetic oils generally cost more than conventional oils and are usually required in today’s modern engines.

What does 5W-30 mean?

The numbers are a measure of viscosity.

Viscosity measures how much motor oil can resist flow. In other words, if you tip a motor oil bottle over, how fast it spills out indicates its viscosity. The more viscous, the slower it flows.

To indicate viscosity, the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) developed a standard scale:

  • 0W is thinnest (“W” stands for winter and is the viscosity rating when the oil is cold)
  • 5W
  • 10W
  • 15W
  • 20W

For example, 10W-30 means the viscosity is at 10W when the engine is cold and 30 when the engine is hot.

It’s important to know which grade of oil is recommended for your vehicle. In addition to 5W-30, other common viscosities are 10W-30 and 5W-20. Your vehicle’s recommended oil type should be listed in your owner’s manual or on the oil cap. If not, a MasterWorks Automotive associate would be happy to discuss which oil would be best for your vehicle.

Should I change my oil filter with every oil change?

Yes. The oil filter catches contaminants and impurities to help keep your oil cleaner longer.
